Patrick Mahomes injury status: Chiefs quarterback's ankle is 'not broken, but it's painful

The Kansas City Chiefs had a scare in the fourth quarter of their Week 15 game against the Cleveland Browns when Patrick Mahomes limped out of the pocket after an incomplete pass on fourth-and-3. Mahomes took the snap and tried to move around the pocket to buy himself more time in the play. Eventually, the defense collapsed  and he had to jump to throw the ball. The pass bounced right in front of the intended receiver, but more importantly, Mahomes was extremely slow to get up on the play. It took him a long time to get up and he walked toward the sideline with a big rest on his leg.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, X-rays on Mahomes' injured ankle were negative. He is expected to miss week to week due to the injury. Coach Andy Reid confirmed in his post-game press conference that Mahomes injured his right ankle.

"It's not broken, but it hurts," Reid told reporters. "He'll start rehabbing it little by little, but after that, we'll  have to see how it goes." The good news for Chiefs fans? Reid called Mahomes a "day-to-day" performer and said the quarterback "probably could have played again" if the Chiefs hadn't been down. "He wanted to play again," Reid said. "It wasn't necessary."

The Chiefs initially said Mahomes was "doubtful" to return to play after his ankle injury. He was injured while attempting a fourth-down pass in the fourth quarter against the Browns and was seen on the sideline with his injured ankle bandaged. Carson Wentz replaced Mahomes on the ensuing drive, and the Chiefs started the game with a 14-point lead with 5:23 left in the game.

Mahomes left the game having completed 19 of 38 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. After the game, he was seen leaving the locker room unassisted but left on a cart.
