Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, was hospitalized after sustaining a hip fracture during an official trip to Luxembourg. Pelosi tripped and fell on a staircase while attending an event, according to media reports. Her spokesperson, Ian Krager, stated that Pelosi is "receiving excellent treatment" and remains optimistic about returning to the U.S. soon, continuing her work from the hospital in the meantime.
Pelosi was part of a bipartisan Congressional delegation
visiting Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. The delegation includes 17 other House members, veterans, their families, and military officials. While Pelosi is unable to attend the remaining events, the trip will proceed as planned.
A prominent figure in U.S. politics, Pelosi has served in the House for decades, spanning seven presidential administrations. She held the role of House Speaker twice, first from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Although she stepped down from leadership last year, she continues to serve in Congress and was recently re-elected for another term.
The incident follows a similar accident involving Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recently sustained minor injuries after a fall at the Capitol.
